Meeting Details for Job Search Strategy Program for Professionals In-Transition!

HR Professionals...Recruit Your Next Employees Here!

Meet us at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church "MDUMC"
The Gate
13194 Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas 77079

Class is held at MDUMC’s off-campus facility called "The Gate" which is a newly renovated office location about ¼ mile west of the main campus, located in a strip shopping center at 13194 Memorial Drive.  It’s impossible to miss this location, since the mall is anchored by a T.J. Maxx store in the center.

If you’re traveling to the location on I-10, exit south on Wilcrest until you arrive at the Memorial Drive intersection (about ½ mile from I-10).  Take a left (you should now be heading east), and the shopping center is located about ¼ mile on the left (north) side of Memorial Drive.  "The Gate" is situated at the far left side of the mall.

The facility is gorgeous and extremely user friendly, with tables and comfortable cushioned chairs.  Lighted parking is in very close proximity to the front door.  Please remember that the new location is church property and, as such, please treat it with the utmost courtesy and respect as we did with our former host.

The class meets on Wednesdays from 6:15 PM – 9:15 PM.

Space at this same location can also be available during the daytime for meetings of small groups or mock interviews.  We will continue to meet every Wednesday evening thereafter, unless notified in advance.

Your Texas HR Pros faculty will include Marvin Martin, Val Kasperek, and Eric Griesel.

Phone messages related to the class may be left with Sheri Kelley – our host, at 713-468-8356 ext. 119.  Also, feel free to reach out to Marvin, Val or Eric via phone, as needed.

We will work hard to get everyone connected with their next employer.

Special Thanks to Guest Speaker Ruby Glass

Texas HR Pros' training program attendees on May 23, 2013
On Thursday, May 23, Ruby Glass of Near Northwest Management District was a guest speaker at Houston's Job Search Strategy Program at Second Baptist Church.

We invited Glass, because the Near Northwest Management District recently awarded Texas HR Pros with a Community Service Award for volunteering and speaking at their annual job fair also benefiting WorkFaith Connection. Marvin Martin of Texas HR Pros and Second Baptist Church's Career Connections is a strong supporter of WorkFaith Connection and encourages HR professionals to volunteer for them and perform mock interviews.

Glass gave her MBA and commerce experience advice for job seekers, which was well-received because her organization represents 300+ businesses in Houston.  She also made a compelling speech at the end of the class about working with ethical and Christian principles, and she had a fan club approach her after the meeting.

During her free time, Glass is a minister and instructor for New Harvest Christian Church.  She teaches Christian business owners who desire to apply Kingdom Principles to starting and running a business. She has an upcoming business series beginning on Saturday, July 6, at New Harvest Christian ChurchFor more information and registration, see  http://kingdomclassy.eventbrite.com/ or email KingdomClassy@gmail.com.

LinkedIn 101 Enlightenment by HR and Social Media Expert Susan Kubiak

Ever wonder how top-notch recruiters use LinkedIn to find ideal candidates? Well today, at Second Baptist Church in Houston, an auditorium full of job seekers gathered for Career Connections' second annual LinkedIn 101 training to become enlightened. Career Connections, a job ministry of Second Baptist Church, conducts job training seminars for Houstonians throughout the year.
Susan Kubiak, MBA and Marvin Martin, SPHR enlightening job seekers

Susan Kubiak of Performance Search Group, a division of Career Partners International, led the training with LinkedIn's history, growth, and facts. Kubiak is an expert in the field of social media and has also taught LinkedIn recruitment tips to HR professionals at other organizations.

Kubiak shared profile optimization tips from recruiters' eyes. She stressed the importance of placing key words in the "Summary" and "Specialties" sections, so recruiters can find candidates with those particular skills when they use the "Advanced Search" feature in LinkedIn. She also covered the value of joining LinkedIn groups to network and see the "Job Discussions" tab.

Texas HR Pro's Houston leader, Marvin Martin, was instrumental in setting up and cross marketing the event across several LinkedIn Groups. Martin invited Texas HR Pros' class for professionals in transition, the Career Connections' members, and other job ministries to the event. Martin also has a recruitment background and is an industrious social media user.

LinkedIn 201 Training at Woodway Village at Second Baptist
Kubiak's next training will be LinkedIn 201 on Thursday, November 1, from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM, at Second Baptist Church. This class is also a complimentary training, and there is no need to register.

We thank Kubiak and Martin for their volunteerism in guiding Houstonians to thrive and find their future jobs.

HR Roundtable Network

Below is a special LinkedIn announcement from our friends at HR Roundtable Network.  They are another great example of a networking group that extended their membership reach via the social media platform LinkedIn.

If you've not noticed, membership in the HR Roundtable Network has passed 2,000!

Many of you recall that this group started with seven HR professionals around a physical table in Houston back in 2001. In 2009, I moved the group to Linkedin, and it has continued to grow and expand well beyond Houston.

Many thanks to all of you who've participated in this growth, and I trust your involvement has been beneficial! I encourage you to post your questions, discussions, job openings, and related HR issues to the group, as there's a wealth of knowledge amongst our members.

Also, be sure to mark your calendars for the Tuesday, October 16 meeting in Houston. More details and a request for RSVPs will follow. Thanks again!

Lynda Doty

Sign Up for this Job Fair Free to Employers

Epiphany of the Lord Semi-Annual Job Fair
After the Texas HR Pros InTransition meeting today, the majority of us took a field trip to the popular and very organized, semi-annual job fair at Epiphany of the Lord in Katy to meet 50+ employers.  Meeting giants like Cameron Industries, Christus Hospital, G E Oil & Gas, Memorial Hermann Hospital, Schlumberger, and Wells Fargo Bank face-to-face was a definite plus for job seekers.

Ed Conner and Eric Griesel
The event was easy to find thanks to neighborhood signs and was jam packed.  Upon walk in, job seekers were greeted with a friendly smile and given a registration form, a map of the booths, positions by each employer and recruitment agency, and an evaluation.

Eric Griesel, founder of Texas HR Pros, seemed to know every HR and professional behind the recruitment table and invited the recruiters to the meetings.  He even ran out of cards and had to run to his truck to grab some more.

Ed Conner, a business consultant and job ministries volunteer, brought the idea of a job networking group for professionals to the Epiphany of the Lord about six years ago after seeing a need in the community.  Conner and his group assists job seekers with networking, fine-tuning interview skills, and updating résumés to all professions in all industries.

Guest Speaker Don Hare at Houston Chapter Today

Today, Don Hare, Vice President of Administration for Parker Drilling, gave recruitment and job search tips to a packed house of 100+ HR professionals and professionals in transition at the weekly Texas HR Pros meeting in Houston.

Hare heard each attendee deliver a 30-second pitch to impress an interviewer.  Only a handful did not run over the 30-second mark.  Then, Hare emphasized the following job search and employment tips from an executive's viewpoint:
  • Everyone should practice their 30-second professional introduction in groups.
  • Effective networking is beyond LinkedIn contacts...it's about building relationships first before talking about business.
  • Smile during your interview.
  • Job seekers need to grab the resume reviewer within the first quarter top of the paper, and they should not use a small font.
  • Pay it forward and volunteer in the community...feel good and build your confidence by helping others.
  • "It's better to be interested than interesting."~Dale Carnegie
  • When you start your job, make your boss look good.
  • At first, wait to be a gamechanger and listen to your supervisor's strategic direction.  It's easier for your supervisor to manage a dog sledding team than to herd cats.
He ended the meeting by pointing out to audience members informing them of who they needed to contact for jobs and shared other job ministry resources.

About Don Hare:  Hare joined Parker Drilling in 2011 as vice president, administration. Before joining Parker Drilling, Mr. Hare was an independent consultant specializing in human resource leadership. Mr. Hare also served as an independent consultant at various times throughout his career. Mr. Hare has held positions of leadership at Lyondell Chemical, DIMON Inc., Citizens Utilities, Diageo PLC, Scott Paper Company and International Paper Company. Mr. Hare is a member of CEO NetWeavers, National Association of Corporate Directors, Society for Human Resources Management, American Society for Training and Development, and the Columbia College Alumni Recruiting Committee. Don received a bachelor’s degree from Columbia University and a master’s degree from New York University.
