Sign Up for this Job Fair Free to Employers

Epiphany of the Lord Semi-Annual Job Fair
After the Texas HR Pros InTransition meeting today, the majority of us took a field trip to the popular and very organized, semi-annual job fair at Epiphany of the Lord in Katy to meet 50+ employers.  Meeting giants like Cameron Industries, Christus Hospital, G E Oil & Gas, Memorial Hermann Hospital, Schlumberger, and Wells Fargo Bank face-to-face was a definite plus for job seekers.

Ed Conner and Eric Griesel
The event was easy to find thanks to neighborhood signs and was jam packed.  Upon walk in, job seekers were greeted with a friendly smile and given a registration form, a map of the booths, positions by each employer and recruitment agency, and an evaluation.

Eric Griesel, founder of Texas HR Pros, seemed to know every HR and professional behind the recruitment table and invited the recruiters to the meetings.  He even ran out of cards and had to run to his truck to grab some more.

Ed Conner, a business consultant and job ministries volunteer, brought the idea of a job networking group for professionals to the Epiphany of the Lord about six years ago after seeing a need in the community.  Conner and his group assists job seekers with networking, fine-tuning interview skills, and updating résumés to all professions in all industries.

FosterQuan and Workforce Solutions Partner to Offer Free HRCI Course

Helene Dang, Workforce Solutions team, and Texas HR Pros
Workforce Solutions provides free HRCI training sessions twice a month.  Today, several members of Texas HR Pros attended a packed "What's Hot in Immigration Law" course by FosterQuan, LLP.

Helene Dang, partner at FosterQuan, LLP, presented the types of and features of available work visas and how to coordinate them with other petitions. Dang also explained audit preparation and compliance requirements related to work visas.

The two-hour presentation was well-organized and easy to follow even though there were many details to cover.  We received a handy copy of the PowerPoint presentation and other Workforce Solutions materials. Gourmet coffee was served and prizes were awarded at the end.  Donna B., from Texas HR Pros, was one of the winners!

Helene Dang was a well-versed speaker.  She has been practicing immigration and nationality law exclusively for more than nine years. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston and her juris doctorate from South Texas College of Law and is board certified in immigration and nationality law, Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Dang handles a variety of immigration matters for large corporations as well as for small businesses and individuals and has extensive experience and knowledge of non-immigrant visa processing (H-1B, L-1, TN, B-1, E-1 and E-2, E-3, O-1), employment-based permanent residency (PERM labor certification, EB-1, EB-2, National Interest Waiver), family-based permanent residency, I-9 compliance, consular processing, as well as naturalization and citizenship issues.

Dang has been recognized as a Texas Rising Star by Super Lawyers magazine.  She is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), State Bar Chamber of Commerce, Asia Society, United Way Young Leaders, and Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program. She regularly provides presentations for corporate clients, human resources personnel, and continuing legal education conferences.

List of Top Employment Attorneys from 25th Annual Employment Law Conference

Several members of Texas HR Pros recently attended the 25th Annual Employment Law Conference at South Texas College of Law.  We heard enlightening legal stories from plaintiff and defense attorneys on how to prevent HR nightmares.  EEOC and NLRB officials also shared catalyst cases and grey areas to avoid.

The most amusing speaker was Mark McClish who gave us detection tips on how to tell if politicians and the infamous in the media are lying, fibbing, or evading the truth...oh, he asked us not to use these analytic techniques with family and friends or we wouldn't have any.  Speaker and head chair of the conference, Michael Maslanka, also shared tips on the power of using questions to influence making ethical decisions and the importance of composing the facts in "story" form, so a jury can relate and envision what happened.  Both speakers are also authors had a book signing too.

Liz D'Aloia, our Texas HR Pros leader in Dallas who is also an attorney, also attended and gave us networking tips and referrals.  She was a speaker at the 4th Annual In-House Counsel Conference the day before at South Texas College of Law.  The conferences are related and organized by many of the same committee members.

What was really impressive is that all the speakers seemed to have a 5-minute introduction, because of their accolade of degrees, awards, press titles, publications, etc.  Below is a list of attorneys who are considered the top in Texas by their peers.

Talentomics Lecture, EBook, and White Paper from Yesterday

What is Talentomics? It is the sophisticated study of global, trans-generational management of the talent supply chain influenced by technology and other driving forces.

Lance J. Richards, who has an impressive list of accomplishments and global responsibility, is the VP of Kelly Services' Workforce Strategy and Evolution department (also known as the Innovation office).  For kicks, he shared how his first job was at Astroworld in Houston, TX and now it is a parking lot.

Yesterday, Richards conducted an intriguing presentation about the future (which is now) and the following topics:
  • Millenials' work preferences,
  • The global talent gap,
  • HR needing to "r"evolutionize with a different kind of ‘talent’ supply chain, and
  • HR learning how the company makes money in order to sit at the Executive table.
Attached is an eBook of the presentation which best summarizes what we need to expect as employees and HR professionals. For the White Paper, click here.

Career Coach Andrew Castillo Credits Networking and Bears

Andrew Castillo, a life and career coach, brought a devil bear and an angel bear to a full house at the HR Roundtable Network for his Angels and Devils; Friends and Foes of Your Success speech today.  He used the bears as props for the careful balance of being pessimistic enough to be proactive to find a job (devil) and to be optimistic enough (angel) to have a good vibe when meeting others during the job search.

Before I move forward with my account of the meeting, you must know that Castillo has a following of fans...his training delivery, relate-able analogies, and story-telling skills make him an inspiring speaker.  You may listen to a sound clip about recognizing your self worth if you want to hear a snippet of his training.

Castillo alluded to a couple of stories in the Bible that teach us to have faith in God, have a plan, follow the signs, embrace those around you through the journey, and not complain.  He shared how 19 months of unemployment, the death of his mother, and having his car repossessed made it the worst time of his life.  He got by those times thanks to the bonds he made with a career network in Katy.

His best story during the training was about how the law of opportunities happen at the most inappropriate or unexpected times.  One day, he was waiting at Starbucks out in Katy to meet an executive who was running extremely late.  While he was working away on his computer being productive, someone recognized him from a former networking introduction and a chain of synchronized introductions, which 100% led him to his present job.
Here are the Top 10 takeaways from the meeting to build a career:
  1. Design a one-year, three-year, and five-year plan for you and your family.
  2. Actually write your goals down.  Read the correlation to success in this study by Dr. Gail Matthews.
  3. Plot your timeline.  Do you know the date you want to achieve your goal?
  4. Chronicle all of your efforts and encounters in a journal.
  5. What do you want to be when you grow up?  If you don't enjoy your current profession, don't allow your subconscious to sabotage you in your career or job search.
  6. Use a bulleted list for a clear networking speech.
  7. Treat every encounter during networking as a first impression for a job opportunity.
  8. Always remember, who we are is much greater than what we do as a profession.  Serve a greater purpose and get a higher perspective of your self worth.
  9. Note to self:  Hang out at Starbucks more often.  Work in public, so people can reach out to you in person.
  10. Castillo has a networking group that meets every month at Ruby Tequilas, 7748 FM 1960 West
Houston, TX 77070, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.  His next meeting is Tuesday, July 17.   MAP
About the Speaker:  Currently, Castillo is contracted to British Petroleum where he is part of a large Upstream program. He also works with a U.K. based group to facilitate communication workshops for BP based on the Insights Discovery Model in which he is accredited. He conducts seminars on Leadership and Management, Communication Styles and Techniques, Successfully Managing IT projects, and 'All Things Job Search'.  For more information about Andrew Castillo, please visit his career coach site

About the Host:  For more information about Lee Hecht Harrison and the HR Roundtable Network please join them on LinkedIn.

Talentomics- The Next Business Crisis Seminar: Tuesday, July 10

The global financial crisis seems to be over—or at

least we think. One thing we know with certainty

is that the workforce has changed, and that means

life in HR has changed. Our survival, as a profession

and as HR professionals, is at stake. The rules are

different now.

It’s essential that HR professionals pause for a

moment to think about where we are, what is

influencing us, and what we need to do next.

In this Talentomics session, we’ll review nine global

macro trends that are shaping the economics

of talent and how HR can (and must) leverage

these trends to deliver business success. Some

of the trends that will be discussed include the

impact of globalization, the change in workforce

demographics, the implications of HR operating

in a cross-border environment, the impact of

the Millennials on the workplace, the shift in HR

expectations, and the changing requirements of HR

from a business perspective.

Please join us for this enlightening presentation.

When:   Tuesday, July 10, 2012   1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
