Texas HR Pros Begin PHR and SPHR Prep Course

Center:  Director David Lewis and Instructor Bonnie Scherry
David Lewis, Director of Business & Professions, Continuing and Professional Education, at San Jacinto College, set up a special study prep course for 25 Texas HR Pros.  The group presented Lewis with a cake on the first day of class for his successful effort in obtaining 25 scholarships and a test fee reimbursement for employed and unemployed HR professionals desiring to take the PHR or SPHR in 2012.

Instructor Bonnie Scherry, who is a member of Texas HR Pros, is teaching the study course.  Scherry is also teaching the same course with HR Houston this fall.  Lewis collaborated with HR Houston to find Scherry who also previously taught at a local HR chapter in Louisiana.

Members of Texas HR Pros are setting up study groups on LinkedIn for Houston and Dallas.

Carlton Staffing Trains Houston Job Seekers

Career Connections partnered with Carlton Staffing on Wednesday, September 26 to deliver workshops on "Rebuilding Your Self-Esteem" and "Steps to Building an Effective/Measurable Job Search Plan" at Second Baptist Church on Woodway.

Nearly 200 job seekers registered to see Annette Monks, President of Carlton Staffing, vivaciously present two insightful seminars with the right combination of direct advice and humor.  She encouraged the audience to stay motivated and be more judicious and diligent in their search with several tips.
Annette Monks, President of Carlton Staffing

Here are some of the memorable tips-
  • Identity and Role- Don't let a change in your role affect your identity.  A job position, a  role, does not define you, you define the job.
  • Value-  Monks pulled out a twenty dollar bill and asked the audience if they found it crumpled and stomped on in the parking lot, would they pick it up.  Everyone answered yes.  She said that the twenty dollars was symbolic of our self worth...no matter what happened to the twenty dollar bill it still retains its value.
  • Overcome Quickly-  Take a tip from Michael Jordan.  Winners may lose or experience a fall in their career.  Their success rebounds because they recover quickly.  He reinvents the sport every time he rises--and rises--into the air.
  • Utilize Advanced Search on LinkedIn- Perform an advanced search to find out who you can send your resume to in Human Resources.
  • The Administrative Assistant Knows All- When researching your target company, contact an administrative assistant to get the skinny on the job.
  • Don't Wait for that Call- Monks explained why HR and staffing agencies do not have the time to follow up with every resume submission.  Don't take it personally and send a friendly follow up email or call.
  • Thank You Cards or Email?- She shared a statistic that thank you cards are opened more frequently than thank you emails.
Career Related Websites - These sites will help improve the success of your job search. You'll find career advice, resume writing tips, interview techniques, search tips and a lot more, organized by industry.

Non-Profit Job Ministries - These groups provide encouragement, information, networking, spiritual guidance, and job search skills training in a faith-based setting. The ministries are open to job seekers of all backgrounds and denominations.

Teresa and Marvin of Career Connections at Second Baptist Church
Attendees met with Carlton's recruiters after the event who were looking to fill more than 200 open positions in various industries.

If your staffing agency would like to present a workshop for Career Connections, please contact Texas HR Pros' leader, Marvin Martin at Marvin@TexasHRPros.com.

Free Webinar: The Elements of Interactive eLearning

David Anderson, Community Manager at Articulate

Wednesday, October 3, 2012 | 10:00AM Pacific Time

Free Webinar, Membership Not Required

This webinar showcases one of the most popular, best-rated sessions from DevLearn 2011 Conference & Expo, newly updated and now available to all through this special online presentation.
It wasn’t too long ago that eLearning designers wanting to build interactive courses were forced to choose between one of two realities: a blissful illusion of interactivity, or the painful truth that interactivity required advanced programming skills. That’s no longer the case because today’s eLearning tools make it easy for anyone to design interactivity.
This session is all about deconstructing the best corporate eLearning, multimedia journalism, and interactive infographics. Participants will learn the three most common types of interactivity and learn creative ways to apply interactivity in their own courses.
In this session, you will learn:
  • The basic elements of interactivity
  • Rapid instructional design models that you can build with any authoring program
  • How to evaluate and design the right interactivity
  • How to reuse interactive widgets and customize them for new clients and projects

David Anderson is an eLearning designer with more than 15 years of experience in online training. His portfolio includes custom eLearning design for NASCAR, Mercedes, Tufts University, and Delta and America West Airlines. As Community Manager at Articulate, he works with the eLearning community, helping users get the most from their tools, while finding creative ways to build more engaging courses.

Back By Popular Demand: Making Performance Management More Manageable—and Less Maddening

Webinar Registration

We've been getting lots of request for this original webcast so we've decided to make it bigger and better this time!

Chasing down employees and managers to complete reviews is not only maddening, it's grossly inefficient. Human resources, managers and employees spend countless hours completing performance appraisals only to file them in a cabinet. Employees must search through endless emails, notebooks, and spreadsheets to find information relevant for the review. Managers must complete reviews and prepare for one-on-one feedback discussions with each employee.

During the webcast, we'll discuss how to overcome the following challenges:

- Lack of clearly defined goals cascaded from the top
- Appraisals not tied to business performance
- Reviews are static, stand-alone & historical
- Limited line-of-sight and transparency throughout company
- Hierarchical and no choice of relevant reviewers
- Infrequent or low-quality performance feedback
- Lack of clear vision on pay-for-performance

Let us know what other topics or challenges you'd like us to cover during this webcast below!

If your schedule doesn't allow you attend- go ahead and register! This way you'll receive a recorded version of the webcast delivered directly to your inbox!

Innovation Workshop by Career Training Network

All good ideas begin with what I call ‘messy ideas,’ ideas with ambiguous edges that are so entangled with other ideas you aren't even sure what you are looking at. In fact, the most important role of technology executives, professional technologists, and project managers is to tease out the clear ideas from the messy ones,” Dr. John Eggert explained at the Community Training Network (CTN) in the Galleria.

Texas HR Pros Leader Angela Stauder (back row, third from right)

Yesterday, several training professionals, a CFO, ASTD board members, business consultants, and HR professionals, gathered to learn why innovative ideas unravel.  We agreed that each of us has witnessed the premature death of good ideas. Most businesses  experience the disappointment and frustration of trying to create positive change only to see well-intentioned efforts fail.

Eggert gave us some business examples from his previous 150+ interviews with leaders from large corps.  He also spiced up his presentation with some famous political scandals to teach us the power of  epic fails in nonverbal communication.

We learned that in order to roll out a good idea and sustain it, the company needs to—support it from the top, keep employees engaged, clearly define roles and responsibilities, and ensure that everyone is on the same page by effective communication and education. My favorite takeaway was the 5 Whys Technique.
Thanks to Career Partners International for hosting the event.

The Post-9/11 G.I. Bill Offers Job Retraining and Educational Support

Article by:  CareerRealism

GI bill banner

The Post-9/11 G.I. Bill allows veterans to pursue an education after their service, providing financial assistance for those who want to purse graduate and undergraduate degrees, as well as vocational training or licensing training. It’s important to consider the terms and requirements of G.I. Bill benefits when making decisions about education programs and degrees.

The G.I. Bill covers all resident tuition and fees for public schools and up to $17,500 per year for private schools. Another source of funding for veterans is the Yellow Ribbon Program, which provides school-sponsored grants and tuition waivers for qualified vets. There are also a variety of scholarships and grants for veterans that are provided by charities and private organizations. For more information about veteran scholarships, visit FinAid.org.

If you’re a veteran who’s considering your education options, your first decision should center on the level of education or training that you want to pursue. Higher education should be a top priority. A college degree now plays the same role that a high school diploma played a few decades ago; it is difficult to achieve economic prosperity without one.

Your next decision should focus on the type of job you’d like to pursue when you complete your education. If you don’t already have a career in mind or are wondering how you can leverage your military training in a civilian career, visit My Next Move for Vets.

This U.S. Department of Labor-sponsored website is designed to help veterans explore post-service career options. The site accesses a database that contains hundreds of occupation descriptions and provides search tools that link military classifications with civilian jobs.
Once you’ve decided on a career and education level, the next step is finding a school that’s the best fit for your requirements. This step should not be taken lightly, since your choice of school can determine your future career success.

The vast majority of colleges and universities will recognize that your military service represents courage, commitment and discipline, so you can aim high when it comes to choosing a school. Look for a school that matches or exceeds your expectation and will provide you with an education that will ensure your future prosperity.

U.S. News & World Report publishes an annual ranking of colleges, including a ranking by program. This means that if you’ve decided to major in business, you can find the top business programs in the nation. You can also check the ranking of schools in your area that you may be considering. You can find out which schools accept the G.I. Bill and search for schools using a wide range of criteria on the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website.

As you begin the application process, make sure that any school you apply for is fully accredited by the U.S. Department of Education. Accreditation ensures that colleges and universities provide standard levels of quality. You can check on a school’s accreditation status by visiting the DOE’s Accreditation Database website.

As a veteran, you may feel more comfortable at a school that has veteran support services. Ask schools you’re considering if they have a veterans affairs office and whether they provide counseling or housing services for veterans. Also find out if you can get college credits for courses taken at other schools as well as credit for relevant military training.

Since you have only 36 months of G.I. Benefits (the equivalent of 4 academic years), it’s important to use your time wisely. Make sure that any credits you earn in the school of your choice can be easily transferred to other schools. If you decide to change schools before you complete your degree, be sure that you get full credit for work completed.

This article was written by Social Media Outreach Coordinator Joshua John on behalf of CAREEREALISM-Approved Partner, 2tor — an education technology company that partners with institutions of higher education such as the University of Southern California which provides a Masters in Military Social Work degree online.

3 Best Practices to Avoid Workplace Violence

Article by: HireRight
A single workplace violence incident can have a devastating impact on the victim(s) as well as his or her employer. The side effects can linger long after the incident, and can have a wide-ranging impact on the employer and its bottom line.
SHRM Survey Costs of Workplace VIolenceTherefore, it is critical that employers take steps to help prevent the occurrence of workplace violence, and to be prepared should an incident occur.
The Costs of Workplace Violence
According to the findings from the recently released SHRM Survey Findings: Workplace Violence, the primary direct costs to organizations associated with an incident of workplace violence include:
  • Management opportunity costs (55%)
  • General productivity loss (37%)
  • Replacement costs from worker turnover (34%).
In addition, the negative effects and indirect costs of workplace violence on employees in an organization include:
  • Decreased morale (29%)
  • Perceived decrease in safety (28%)
  • Less trust in coworkers (28%)
  • Increased levels of stress and depression among workers (24%)
Given the broad impact a single workplace violence incident can have, employers should consider these three best practices when reviewing or developing a workplace violence prevention program.

G-Squared HRCI Workshops this September by Futurist

G-Squared Business Management Services

Harnessing the power of human potential.

Dear colleagues:

Fall 2012 is quickly upon us! Soon, there will be the rush of holidays and deadlines, if not already.

I'm fresh off of a series of presentations at the annual North Texas SHRM and AHRMA Conferences, and now looking toward the upcoming HR Southwest Conference where I will be delivering two strategic presentations.

I had an attendee ask me the proverbial question about "making the switch from tactical to strategic." This question always puzzles me, however. Perhaps because, as a strategist and futurist, I understand the following. Tactical is what you do. Strategic is how you think about what you do. The only "switch" that must take place is in our mindset. Little wonder, then, why so many HR professionals struggle with how to respond to an environment that requires strategy.

If you, too, have been feeling perplexed, or seeking a better understanding of what your business context truly requires of you, then you are hereby encouraged to seek help! I promise, even if you already have your credits, even if you already have a strategic position in your company, what you learn from attending one of my workshops will greatly enhance your leverage.

Upcoming schedule:

September 18 (online) - HR Core Competencies Webinar (2.0 general credits)
September 19 (Houston) - Strategic Presentation on Systems Perspective (1.5 strategic credits)
September 20-21 (Houston) - Strategic HR Workshop (up to 16 strategic credits)
October 1-2 (Austin) - Strategic HR Workshop (up to 16 strategic credits)
October 14-17 (DFW) - HR Southwest Conference (Come say hello...I'd love to meet you!)

Of course, everyone could use a little financial motivation, so to make it easier on your wallet you can use the promo code STRAT75 to take $75 off the cost of the one-day or two-day workshop.

Sincerely,

Olive GatlingConsultant and FuturistG-Squared Business Management Services

Wed., Sept. 5, 2012 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM CDT

Further, the presenters will argue for the integration of 360 degree instruments and personality infrastructure tools. Such combination allows users to consider both current performance of a competency and the natural energy they have for its development.

Participants will learn about:
• Pros and Cons of 360 degree assignments
• Best practices around the design and use of 360s
• The essential elements of an effective 360 program

Every Day Is Labor Day at the Labor Department

Secretary Solis mans her own laptop for the Labor Day Tweet Chat. View the slideshow for more images and captions.
The U.S. Department of Labor is going virtual this Labor Day, using various social media to get the message out. More than 1,400 microblogs were tweeted on Aug. 30 during a pre-Labor Day chat hosted by Labor Secretary Hilda Solis – better known as @HildaSolisDOL to her Twitter followers. The "conversation" ranged from understanding 401(k) fees to the work of the department's Wage and Hour Division investigators. Breaking-news about the winners of the Office of Disability Employment Policy's recent app challenge was also announced. Earlier in the day, Solis was the featured speaker during a "State of the Latino Worker" webinar for media and stakeholders across the country.
Visit our special Labor Day page for photos, videos, history and lots of interesting facts.
She discussed the economic progress in the Latino community, and work the department is doing on behalf of Hispanic women, youth, veterans and vulnerable workers. "Labor Day is every day here at the Labor Department," Solis stated at both events. And it's true. The department has created a special Labor Day webpage, where you can watch Solis' Labor Day video message, find fascinating presentations about the history of the Labor Department, and resources available for workers.
