Carlton Staffing Trains Houston Job Seekers

Career Connections partnered with Carlton Staffing on Wednesday, September 26 to deliver workshops on "Rebuilding Your Self-Esteem" and "Steps to Building an Effective/Measurable Job Search Plan" at Second Baptist Church on Woodway.

Nearly 200 job seekers registered to see Annette Monks, President of Carlton Staffing, vivaciously present two insightful seminars with the right combination of direct advice and humor.  She encouraged the audience to stay motivated and be more judicious and diligent in their search with several tips.

Here are some of the memorable tips-
  • Identity and Role- Don't let a change in your role affect your identity.  A job position, a  role, does not define you, you define the job.
  • Value-  Monks pulled out a twenty dollar bill and asked the audience if they found it crumpled and stomped on in the parking lot, would they pick it up.  Everyone answered yes.  She said that the twenty dollars was symbolic of our self worth...no matter what happened to the twenty dollar bill it still retains its value.
  • Overcome Quickly-  Take a tip from Michael Jordan.  Winners may lose or experience a fall in their career.  Their success rebounds because they recover quickly.  He reinvents the sport every time he rises--and rises--into the air.
  • Utilize Advanced Search on LinkedIn- Perform an advanced search to find out who you can send your resume to in Human Resources.
  • The Administrative Assistant Knows All- When researching your target company, contact an administrative assistant to get the skinny on the job.
  • Don't Wait for that Call- Monks explained why HR and staffing agencies do not have the time to follow up with every resume submission.  Don't take it personally and send a friendly follow up email or call.
  • Thank You Cards or Email?- She shared a statistic that thank you cards are opened more frequently than thank you emails.
Career Related Websites - These sites will help improve the success of your job search. You'll find career advice, resume writing tips, interview techniques, search tips and a lot more, organized by industry.

Non-Profit Job Ministries - These groups provide encouragement, information, networking, spiritual guidance, and job search skills training in a faith-based setting. The ministries are open to job seekers of all backgrounds and denominations.
